South-Karelian Nova

Anyone can join the hobby of stargazing, regardless of age, gender or educational background. Here in the southeast, the Astronomy Club South Karelian Nova helps novice enthusiasts on their way, and also serves as a link for experienced stargazers. Nova was founded over 50 years ago and has seen the huge change in technology that now allows you to take your hobby even further.

Previously, all you needed was functional eyesight, but the transfer of a huge amount of information to the internet, the development of decent telescopes made possible by digital technology, and the development of image processing can take the hobby to a completely different level.

Once a month, except during the summer break, Nova residents gather to discuss current issues in Kuutinkulma. The video conferencing technology inherited from the Corona era allows members to join from all of South Karelia, and usually Veikko Mäkelän from the capital region is also involved.

In spring and autumn, weather permitting, a stargazing evening is organized in the city either at Linnoittus or next to the airport.

WhatsApp has also proven to be a great communication channel, and over the past couple of years, suitable coordinates for a good observation site have been recommended for observing current celestial phenomena such as comets, solar and lunar eclipses

Nova has been diligent in reporting on its activities in its member magazine Tähtiharrastustietoa. The magazine was previously published in paper, but has now moved to an online magazine for everyone to read.

I was encouraged to write there and a few articles have been written. A list of articles can be found at the link
