Outlander
1945: Claire Randall returns from the war to Scotland with her husband Frank – and finds herself in the 18th century.
A journey through time to the Scottish Highlands – a travelogue, a love story and a historical intersection all at once.
The story is written by Dr. Diana Gabaldon, who switched from university life to writing. She has published several thick, over a thousand-page novels in the Outlander series, as well as the Lord John spin-off series and short stories that touch on the events of the main series.
The series begins when Claire Randall returns to Scotland with her husband Frank after World War II – and ends up in the middle of the restless Highlands of the 18th century via a stone circle. Outlander combines time travel, a love story, and 18th- and 19th-century history (Jacobite rebellions, colonial America, independence struggles) in a way that has hooked readers around the world.
The same world is also connected to the graphic novel The Exile, the Lord John novels and the TV series, which you can find more information about further down this page – as well as links to the author's pages, companion works and our own small Outlander projects.

In 2025, a new series, Blood of My Blood, began telling the story of Claire and Jamie's parents.
